American Airlines adds seven international routes for summer 2027
The carrier said the A321XLR jet gives it flexibility to serve smaller transatlantic markets and includes nonstop Philadelphia to Vienna as the only U.S. option.
American Airlines Group is adding seven new international routes to its summer 2027 schedule, with most of the service planned to be flown on its Airbus A321XLR aircraft, according to CNBC as carried by Yahoo Finance.
New destinations include Philadelphia to Porto and Vienna, and JFK to Amsterdam and Nice, plus a returning Reykjavik route and Charlotte to Barcelona and Chicago to Tokyo Narita service on widebody jets.
American said its network and schedule planning SVP, Brian Znotins, described the A321XLR as opening up destinations that were too small to support a widebody aircraft, allowing the airline to expand international capacity without committing to larger jets.
The airline also said the XLR includes a premium-heavy configuration designed to support higher-value long-haul travelers, and it will be the only U.S. carrier offering nonstop service between Philadelphia and Vienna. American added that it is extending the Philadelphia-Vienna route through early January 2028 to capture demand beyond the typical summer season.
