Australian dollar slips as US dollar firms ahead of CPI

AUD/USD was last around 0.7209, with traders watching US August CPI on Friday for clues on the next Fed decision.

The Australian dollar edged lower versus the US dollar in European trading, falling about 0.1% to around 0.7210 as the greenback turned positive after a weak start, according to FXStreet.

FXStreet noted the US Dollar Index was roughly 0.1% higher near 99.00 and said the pair is expected to trade in a broader sideways range as investors wait for US Consumer Price Index data for August, scheduled for Friday.

The report said expectations for the Fed next month hinge on how August inflation looks, with some Fed board members describing recent inflation progress as encouraging while also treating the August figures as a key input.

On the Australian side, markets also look ahead to a Reserve Bank of Australia event, an interview with RBA Deputy Governor Andrew Hauser, which could influence the outlook for the Aussie, FXStreet added.
