Canada’s retaliatory US tariffs begin, ranging 15% to 50%

The measures target multiple sectors and apply to products covering $20 billion in US imports, starting Tuesday at 12.01am.

Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on American goods have taken effect, escalating a widening trade dispute between the US and Canada. The retaliatory measures cover products across several sectors including steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics, with tariff rates ranging from 15% to 50%. The actions apply to products covering $20 billion in imports from the US, and began at 12.01am on Tuesday, according to the report. Canada said the counter-measures come in response to the US decision to impose a 50% tariff on $20 billion of Canadian goods effective August 22. The Canadian government added that its retaliatory tariffs do not apply to US goods that are in transit to Canada on the day the measures come into force. The dispute has intensified in recent weeks, including after Trump announced last month a 50% tariff on cars and raw materials from Canada. The article also notes that Trump has threatened to block sales of Bombardier Aviation in the US unless the Quebec-based plane maker moves manufacturing to the US, and that Bombardier has pointed to job creation across more than 20 states.
