Germany warns winter gas storage may fall short

Current storage at 54.5% puts Germany on track for 63% by Nov. 1 if injection rates stay near 900 GWh per day, and a colder winter could create demand-supply gaps of up to 25% in January.

Germany faces winter gas shortage risk if temperatures run colder than in prior years, according to warnings from the country’s gas storage association, INES, cited by Reuters.

INES said Germany’s gas storage level is 54.5% now, and the industry’s best-case projection is 77% full by Nov. 1, which would still be below typical levels for that date.

Reaching 77% by Nov. 1 would require injecting 1 terawatt-hour per day, but INES head Sebastian Heinemann said injection rates over the past three weeks have been lower, and at current rates storage would be only 63% by Nov. 1.

If winter turns out colder than hoped, INES warned that some days in January could see a gap between gas demand and supply of as much as 25%, even as the EU storage figure moves toward about 70% with several countries above 90%.
