HK to pursue contractor compensation over delayed hospital lift work
The HK$13.5 billion Queen Mary Hospital block faced up to a year of delays after defects left 24 of 28 lifts unusable.
Hong Kong authorities said they have reserved the right to seek compensation from contractors after faulty lift installation work delayed operations at Queen Mary Hospital’s new block, according to SCMP Economy.
Development minister Bernadette Linn Hon-ho said the main contractor, a Paul Y-Able joint venture, and lift subcontractor Anlev Elex Elevator would be required to bear the costs of remedial work so public spending on the project would not increase.
SCMP Economy reported that the block’s full commissioning has been delayed by up to a year, with serious defects leaving 24 of 28 lifts unfit for use.
Linn said works departments will pursue claims under the contract after identifying construction deficiencies, and the delay has prevented medical departments from moving in, although the blood bank and restaurants remain open.
