Indonesia reopens Jakarta airport and four others after Krakatoa ash
Flights resumed early Tuesday after eight airports halted operations over the weekend, disrupting nearly 3,000 flights and stranding more than 340,000 passengers.
Indonesia’s transport ministry said the country has reopened Jakarta’s main airport and four other air travel hubs after days of closures tied to volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatoa, as the disruption eased.
According to SCMP Economy citing the ministry, eight airports had stopped operations after ash was detected in their airspace, disrupting nearly 3,000 flights and leaving more than 340,000 passengers stranded.
The eruption occurred on Saturday, when Mount Anak Krakatoa, about 150 km from Jakarta, spewed lava and a plume of volcanic ash, prompting the initial airport shutdowns over the weekend.
In a posting on Instagram, Jakarta’s Soekarno Hatta International Airport said it resumed flight operations following the current volcanic eruption activity.
