Japan deepens defense ties as Taiwan risk shapes planning
SCMP Economy says Japan is expanding security cooperation and defense-industry and technology partnerships across regions, alongside work with the United States and other treaty and non-treaty partners.
The risk of a conflict over Taiwan is influencing Japan’s defense planning, with Tokyo building security at home and abroad for what could become a prolonged fight, according to SCMP Economy.
The outlet says Japan is also running up against economic, demographic, and political constraints as it transforms its military, even as it seeks to strengthen strategic endurance through partnerships.
SCMP Economy points to cooperation in Australia last month, where Tokyo and Canberra moved to deepen work spanning defense planning, advanced weapons development, and the construction and sustainment of Japanese-designed warships.
It also describes a broader shift that links regional military ties to defense-industrial and technological partnerships across North America and Europe, with the United States cited as Japan’s only treaty ally and security cornerstone and Tokyo seeking additional operational, logistical, intelligence, and supply-chain support from other countries.
