Kalshi-backed deal hedges LSU coaching bonus tied to national title
The LSU-linked contracts cost the buyer $662,050 across five trades, with a $3 million payout if the team wins the national championship.
A third-party insurer placed trades on prediction market Kalshi that could pay out $3 million if LSU wins college football's national championship this season, matching the amount head coach Lane Kiffin would receive under performance bonus terms in his contract, according to Insurance Business.
The structure uses five contracts tied to LSU's path through the College Football Playoff, with the buyer paying $662,050 in total and a counterparty putting up $2,337,950. Kalshi declined to name the buyer, but the setup aligns with the business model of Game Point Capital, a Charleston, South Carolina firm that insures coaching and player performance bonuses for sports organizations.
Insurance Business reports that Game Point has used Kalshi as an alternative to traditional reinsurance, citing flexibility and lower cost versus over-the-counter markets. When Kalshi and Game Point announced their partnership in February, the companies disclosed example pricing for two NBA bonus hedges, including a playoff-berth hedge priced at 6% versus 12% to 13% in the OTC market, and a second-round advancement hedge priced at 2% versus 7% to 8% OTC.
Kalshi has also positioned the exchange as effectively operating as a reinsurer in these deals, while projecting a larger opportunity for sports insurance and reinsurance that is about $9 billion annually and could double by 2030, Insurance Business added. The article also notes Kalshi is facing active litigation in 15 states.
