Kazakhstan student enrollment at Hong Kong universities surges
Kazakhstani enrollment at Hong Kong’s publicly funded universities climbed from 97 students in 2017-18 to 493 in 2025-26, a 408.0% increase.
Kazakhstan recorded the largest student population and the fastest enrollment growth at Hong Kong’s publicly funded universities among Central Asian countries in recent years, according to official data cited by the South China Morning Post.
The University Grants Committee figures show the number of Kazakhstani students rose from 97 in 2017-18 to 493 in 2025-26, up 408.0% over the period, the highest growth rate among the five Central Asian countries tracked.
Among individual institutions, City University of Hong Kong enrolled 203 Kazakhstani undergraduates this year, a record and a 49.0% increase from 135 in the prior academic year.
The report also notes the council chairman said students from Kazakhstan were among the university’s top-performing undergraduates and that the Kazakhstani government is committed to educating its young people.
