The demonstrations took place on September 8-9, 2025, with dozens of young people meeting to honor those who died as Nepal continues to mourn extensive losses from devastating floods that occurred two weeks earlier. The rallies began after anger over a brief government ban on social media, but protesters said the unrest reflected broader frustration with economic hardship, corruption, and entrenched political practices. The protests left 76 people dead and included the torching of the parliament building, the prime minister’s office, and other government buildings. A former protester, Aastha Shrestha, said the loss of life was terrible but argued that political changes followed the unrest.
