Polish prosecutors charge fifth suspect in Zondacrypto case
The suspect faces charges tied to allegedly misappropriating PLN 7.8 million from users and prosecutors seek pre-trial detention.
Polish prosecutors have charged a fifth suspect in an investigation into the crypto exchange Zondacrypto, with authorities estimating the broader case involves at least PLN 350 million, or about $94 million, in losses, according to The Block.
Roman Ż. was detained on Sept. 5 and is accused of participating in an organized criminal group and misappropriating PLN 7.8 million, about $2.1 million, in funds belonging to users of the exchange, prosecutors said.
Authorities allege the group altered computer records without authorization to obtain financial benefits. The prosecutors asked the Katowice Wschód District Court to place Roman Ż. in pre-trial detention, citing potential penalties, risks of obstruction, and the possibility of flight.
If convicted, the alleged offenses carry a maximum prison sentence of 10 years. The Block noted Roman Ż. is the fifth publicly identified person charged so far, after earlier charges against four other individuals, and said the case has more than 3,600 crime reports filed.
