Albanian protests over Trump-linked coastal development turn violent in Tirana
Police blocked demonstrators from reaching parliament in Tirana as the protests marked their 100th day and targeted a coastal project critics say could harm the environment and restrict public access.
Protests in Albania against a luxury coastal development linked to US President Donald Trump’s family turned violent as the march coincided with parliament’s return from a summer recess and the demonstrations marked their 100th day on Monday, according to SCMP Economy.
Police in Tirana blocked protesters from reaching parliament, and crowds pelted riot officers with eggs and tomatoes while cars carrying lawmakers were confronted with plastic water bottles before police intervened to allow passage.
Protesters also highlighted the coastal project with signs depicting a flamingo, a reference to concerns the development could harm the bird, and the rallies have been dubbed the “flamingo revolution.”
SCMP Economy reports that critics are pushing to stop the massive project, saying it could cause environmental damage and reduce public access to the coast, while Albanian officials have avoided detailing any role for Jared Kushner.
