Beijing assigns 155mm PLZ-05 howitzers at brigade level near Taiwan
State media said a brigade in the People’s Liberation Army’s 71st Group Army received PLZ-05 self-propelled howitzers for the first time over the past two months, boosting combat effectiveness.
Beijing has reinforced its artillery posture facing the Taiwan Strait by deploying additional 155mm PLZ-05 self-propelled howitzers at the brigade level, according to state media cited by SCMP Economy.
The outlet said the PLZ-05 has previously been used at the group-army level as a long-range suppression weapon, but was assigned to a heavy combined-arms brigade under the People’s Liberation Army’s 71st Group Army for the first time.
SCMP Economy reported that the brigade received a batch of the tracked howitzers over the past two months and conducted its first related training or operations.
An officer was quoted as saying the delivery of the 155mm systems significantly improved the unit’s overall combat effectiveness, and SCMP Economy noted the howitzers appeared to have been relocated from China’s Western Theatre Command, which has received wheeled PCL-181 155mm systems suited to plateau and mountainous terrain.
