Crypto’s biggest mystery remains, as Satoshi identity still unverified
A New York Times investigation in April 2026 pointed to British cryptographer Adam Back, though he denied the claims.
Cointelegraph highlights that more than 17 years after Bitcoin’s creation, the most persistent unsolved mystery in crypto remains the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, including whether Satoshi was one person or multiple people.
The outlet notes that Satoshi published the Bitcoin white paper in 2008, mined the genesis block in January 2009, and was active in early development before disappearing from public view in 2010.
Cointelegraph says the search has produced many candidate names over the years, ranging from cryptographers and cypherpunks to early Bitcoin developers and others, and it also points out that Craig Wright is the only major candidate that a UK court has formally ruled out as Satoshi.
The article adds that the latest major attempt came in April 2026, when The New York Times named British cryptographer Adam Back as its leading candidate, citing alleged similarities in writings and circumstantial clues, while Back denied the allegations.
