EU proposal would give cities more power to restrict Airbnb-style rentals
The European Commission said its Affordable Housing Act would clarify when local authorities can limit short lets without violating EU single market rules.
The European Commission outlined new conditions that would give European cities more legal leeway to restrict short-term rentals such as Airbnb, as part of an effort aimed at tackling the bloc’s housing crisis, according to Agence France-Presse as carried by SCMP Economy.
In Brussels, housing commissioner Dan Jorgensen said short-term rentals are contributing to problems in many cities by reducing access to long-term flats and pushing up prices, a contention that holiday-let providers dispute.
The plan is designed to address a recurring issue with prior restrictions, which have often faced court challenges and created legal uncertainty for local authorities.
The proposal, which would be negotiated with EU lawmakers and member states as the Affordable Housing Act, seeks to spell out when cities can take action without running afoul of EU single market rules.
