FEFAC details feed industry progress toward sustainability goals

FEFAC said EU policy efforts include raising the share of EU-grown oilseeds and protein crops in domestic feed to 35% by 2035, up from about 25% now.

The European Feed Manufacturers’ Federation, or FEFAC, said the feed sector is taking concrete steps toward sustainability targets as the European Commission rolls out its EU Protein Plan and EU Livestock Strategy. In its sixth Feed Sustainability Charter 2030 Progress Report, released Sept. 8, FEFAC outlined progress across five charter ambitions, including climate neutrality, responsible sourcing, animal health and welfare, resource efficiency, and socio-economic resilience.

World Grain reports the progress update also highlights policy context for Europe’s feed and food supply chains, citing strategic vulnerabilities tied to protein crop availability and reliance on non-EU suppliers for essential feed additives such as vitamins and amino acids.

The report references the Protein Plan’s goal to lift the share of EU-grown oilseeds and protein crops in domestic feed to 35% by 2035, from about 25% currently, framing it as a response to dependency risks.

FEFAC also pointed to achievements from the past year, including work tied to the GFLI Database and a symposium on circular feed, as well as industry site visits for European Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Christophe Hansen. Separately, Green Acres Milling is set to begin operating an oat mill with production capacity of 39,420 tonnes per year of finished oat products, World Grain said.
