Hong Kong falls in PISA rankings as science slips from top 10
Hong Kong’s science mean score fell to 496, down from seventh place in 2022, while it ranked seventh in math with 522 points.
Hong Kong secondary students scored lower in the Programme for International Student Assessment, according to results announced by the University of Hong Kong’s education faculty, with science dropping out of the global top 10 for the first time in the study’s history.
The latest PISA cycle, run for 15-year-olds from May to July 2025 and covering reading, mathematics and science, ranked 17th for science in Hong Kong. Its mean science score was 496, down from a seventh place finish in 2022.
Hong Kong also ranked seventh in mathematics after scoring 522, still above the international average of 463. The decline in local performance has been partly attributed by experts to the post-Covid impact on study habits and learning motivation.
In the science and math standings, mainland Chinese regions including Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang collectively placed first. They scored 597 for science and the mainland’s top regions scored 612 overall, according to the study results summarized by SCMP Economy.
