Japan builds military resilience tied to a potential Taiwan conflict

Japan’s defense planning is increasingly shaped by the risk of a conflict over Taiwan, with Tokyo bolstering security at home and abroad for what could become a prolonged fight, according to SCMP Economy.

The outlet says Tokyo is shifting from purely focusing on deterrence to also preparing for how to sustain operations if deterrence does not work.

SCMP Economy points to Japan’s purchase of a former Nippon Steel site to build a new defense hub as an example of this deeper preparation.

The report also warns that if Beijing gained control over Taiwan, it could strengthen the People’s Liberation Army’s operational position around Japan and expand its access in the western Pacific.
