Malaysia’s PH pledges to fight corruption as Najib pardon talks near
The Pardons Board, chaired by the king, is expected to meet on Friday to consider clemency for Najib Razak’s corruption sentence tied to the 1MDB scandal.
Malaysia’s ruling Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition reiterated its pledge to crack down on corruption as attention turns to a potential decision by the country’s Pardons Board on Najib Razak, a disgraced former leader serving a jail term linked to the multibillion-dollar 1MDB scandal, according to SCMP Economy.
The Pardons Board, chaired by the king, is expected to meet on Friday to discuss whether to grant Najib clemency from his ongoing sentence. The decision could hinge on whether the board grants a full pardon, which would mean Najib’s immediate release and that his records would be wiped of existing criminal records.
The report also notes that Najib had previously sought a court order to complete his sentence at home after his 12-year jail term was halved and his fine reduced from 210 million ringgit to 50 million ringgit following a 2024 decision by former king Sultan Abdullah Ahmad Shah.
In a statement responding to local reporting about the Friday meeting, PH’s secretaries’ council said the coalition continued to reject corruption and abuse of power, adding that anyone found guilty of such offences, especially in high-profile cases, must complete their sentences in full. SCMP Economy also links the discussion to Malaysia’s broader political backdrop, including the earlier freedom of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim from a sodomy conviction in 2018.
