Rubio visits Colombia to address critical minerals and ties to China

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Colombia for meetings with President Abelardo de la Espriella, marking the first visit by a cabinet level U.S. official since the Colombian president took office about a month ago, the South China Morning Post reports.

Ahead of the trip, Rubio said the two countries share common interests, including cooperation on regional transnational criminal terrorism and economic engagements.

According to a Colombian official, critical minerals and civil nuclear cooperation were among the topics, alongside Colombia’s participation in the Belt and Road Initiative and Chinese investment in critical infrastructure.

Rubio met with President de la Espriella as part of efforts to clarify and manage Colombia’s ties with China amid broader regional concerns and economic engagement.
