Trump condemns Australia social media crackdown as extortion

Australia’s “My Feed, My Way” plan would let users opt out of social media algorithms, and draft “digital duty of care” legislation is expected this week.

US President Donald Trump criticized Australia’s new effort to regulate social media, describing the moves as “a form of extortion” aimed largely at American tech companies, according to SCMP Economy citing remarks from a White House economics spokesman.

The response follows Australia’s “My Feed, My Way” initiative announced by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, which would give Australians the option to opt out of social media algorithms, according to the report.

SCMP Economy also said draft legislation creating a mandatory “digital duty of care” is expected to be introduced to parliament this week.

Australia’s communications minister, Anika Wells, said the goal is to give Australians more choice over what they see in their feeds, SCMP Economy reported, as the policy debate intersects with wider concerns over digital services taxes and penalties.
