U.S. gasoline hits Labor Day record as diesel prices jump

The national average unleaded gasoline price reached $4.15 per gallon, up 30% year over year, while diesel rose to $5.90.

U.S. gasoline prices hit a Labor Day record as motorists continued to face elevated costs at the pump, according to OilPrice. The national average cost of unleaded gasoline stood at $4.15 per gallon on Monday, up 30% from a year earlier.

Diesel prices were also sharply higher, rising to $5.90 per gallon from $3.70 a year ago. The outlet said the prior Labor Day record of $3.83 per gallon was set in 2012.

OilPrice linked today’s jump to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, noting that even though gas is not at all time highs, the record level in late summer could keep average prices above $4 per gallon on Labor Day for the first time.

GasBuddy chief analyst Patrick De Haan said gas prices have reached a record level this late in the year, while the article also cited that the biggest increases were felt in several western and mountain states.
