Yen strengthens, pushing USD/JPY down as markets price BoJ hike

USD/JPY fell to 152.88 before consolidating around 153.26, with traders fully pricing a 25 basis point BoJ rate hike in September.

The Japanese yen is strengthening without apparent official intervention, dragging USD/JPY lower to 152.88 before consolidating around 153.26, according to FXStreet.

FXStreet reports that the move reflects what strategists see as a more durable shift in Japan’s economic fundamentals, including rising real wages, expanding JGB yields, and resilient growth, rather than a repeat of prior rallies fueled by currency intervention.

With carry trade assumptions under scrutiny, strategists at Rabobank and MUFG cited changing domestic incentives for Japanese investors to move capital abroad, noting that higher JGB yields and wage gains are reducing the appeal of funding positions that rely on yen weakness.

The analysts also said markets have effectively fully priced a 25 basis point BoJ hike for September, leaving BoJ communication about the longer term rate path as a key driver for whether the yen’s strength persists.
