Hong Kong to back local media expansion under ‘go global’ plan
A source cited by SCMP said the measures will focus on helping outlets build networks outside Hong Kong, including in Belt and Road countries, while pledging no interference with newsroom operations.
Hong Kong’s policy address next week will continue measures intended to help local news organizations expand overseas and build global networks, according to the South China Morning Post. The outlet reports it learned from a source that Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu’s “go global” initiative is expected to support media groups that publish in both Chinese and English as they seek readers beyond the city.
The source also said the media industry could offer services particularly in countries associated with the Belt and Road Initiative. The source added that Hong Kong’s government will keep assisting local media with expanding their networks outside Hong Kong and sharing stories about the city, noting that Lee pledged last year the initiative would not involve interference with media operations.
