Mosaic Insurance launches AI Lab to scale in-production AI use

The insurer says its Forward Deployed Engineer model is meant to move AI from pilots to production at speed, embedded with underwriting, claims, and operations teams.

Mosaic Insurance, a global specialty insurer, announced it is launching an AI Lab and a Forward Deployed Engineer, or FDE, Programme to accelerate practical artificial intelligence adoption across its business functions.

The AI Lab, a new unit working across Mosaic’s businesses, will focus on rapid delivery and measurable outcomes in areas including underwriting, finance, and global operations, with senior leadership prioritizing use cases tied to the firm’s automation strategy, according to Reinsurance News.

Mosaic said the FDE model is designed to avoid the pilot-only approach it says does not scale, arguing that engineers need to be embedded in front and back office operations to change core processes like underwriting, reserves, and decision-making.

The company also said it has hired its first cohort of AI, machine learning, and data science experts for its London office, and that the AI Lab is built on reusing AI infrastructure across projects, training on Mosaic’s own policy and loss data, and aligning outputs with how underwriting, claims, and operations teams run the business.
