Older construction workers face high blood pressure, persistent pain
In 2022, older construction workers reported high blood pressure at 59.4%, while diabetes and high cholesterol were lower than the all-industries comparison.
Older construction workers show a mixed chronic disease profile compared with older workers across all U.S. industries, according to a CPWR data bulletin published by Risk & Insurance.
The bulletin found that in 2022, 59.4% of construction workers 51 and older reported high blood pressure, nearly matching the rate across all industries, while diabetes (20.0% vs. 26.5%) and high cholesterol (17.9% vs. 30.8%) were lower in construction.
Heart conditions were far less common in construction, reported by 2.9% of older construction workers compared with 25.1% across all industries, and stroke was reported by 1.6% versus 6.9% industry-wide.
Risk & Insurance also highlighted that older construction workers reported lower asthma diagnoses than the broader workforce in the 2020 to 2024 period, and that hearing ratings diverged sharply, with 28.8% describing hearing as excellent to very good versus 46.5% across all industries.
