Philippines ferry fire kills five, 86 still missing near Palawan
The MV June Aster was burning near Coron after a blaze broke out Wednesday evening, with the coastguard saying the manifest listed 134 passengers and crew.
A ferry fire off the Philippine province of Palawan has killed at least five people and left 86 others missing, the coastguard said. The blaze broke out aboard the MV June Aster on Wednesday evening about 2.2 km (1.3 miles) offshore, near a major tourist area.
The coastguard said five casualties had been brought ashore. Footage shared by the coastguard showed the vessel completely engulfed in flames.
In updates on Thursday, coastguard Captain Noemi Cayabyab said rescued people stood at 42 based on the current data, and that 87 people were still unaccounted for. She added that the ship’s manifest listed 134 passengers and crew.
