Tung Chee-hwa death draws tributes for role in US-China ties
Statements from the US consulate and the George H.W. Bush Foundation highlighted Tung's influence on US-Hong Kong relationship-building around the 1997 handover.
Hong Kong’s first chief executive Tung Chee-hwa died on Tuesday, drawing tributes for his role in shaping relations between China and the United States, with acknowledgments extending to the US consulate and a foundation tied to the George H.W. Bush family.
The George H.W. Bush Foundation said it offered condolences over Tung’s death and credited him with decades of what it described as visionary leadership in Sino-US relations, emphasizing his personal qualities and influence on the bilateral relationship.
According to the South China Morning Post, the US Consulate General in Hong Kong and Macau noted Tung played a pivotal role in strengthening ties between the US and Hong Kong during a period of profound transition, both before and after the 1997 handover.
The foundation also said Tung’s deep and positive impact on the world’s most consequential bilateral relationship would endure, while former city leader Donald Tsang Yam-kuen praised Tung’s efforts in strengthening the relationship and paving the way for deeper business links and high-level dialogue in the early post-handover years.
