AI safety talks highlight Trump-Xi meeting amid low expectations
The US proposed an AI safety mechanism during recent talks, but the measure is described as falling short of a broader safety agreement.
AI safety is set to be a key focus of the Trump-Xi meeting as distrust between the United States and China remains high, with most observers expecting limited concrete results, according to the Guardian Business.
The leaders have already met once this year in Beijing, where they discussed building “strategic stability,” but progress was constrained by ongoing disputes over trade, export controls, and geopolitics, the outlet said.
With Xi Jinping arriving in Maryland for the US leg of his state visit, Bonnie Glaser, a managing director at the German Marshall Fund, said expectations are very low and that no one is using the term “deliverables.”
The Guardian Business also noted that US officials have been pursuing cooperation on AI safety, including remarks attributed to U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who proposed an AI safety mechanism between Washington and Beijing during talks with Chinese vice-premier He Lifeng, and that the mechanism appears to stop short of a major safety agreement.
