CorVel says AI will reshape claims, but fundamentals still drive outcomes
CorVel SVP CJ Cypcar said claims teams face rising claim severity and more complexity, so AI should help prioritize signals while governance, validation, security, and privacy are built in from the start.
Risk & Insurance spoke with CJ Cypcar, SVP of Product Development at CorVel, about how AI is affecting claims work and what remains most important for results.
Cypcar said the industry is not choosing between technology and core claims fundamentals like speed, communication, and return to work. He argued that claims professionals are managing more information and complexity than ever, with claim severity still rising, and that the challenge is shifting from access to data toward identifying what matters and what should happen next, where AI can connect and prioritize signals across medical information, claim activity, and return-to-work inputs.
On AI adoption, Cypcar said organizations should focus on confidence by being intentional about where and how AI is used, rather than trying to automate everything. He added that governance should be part of the initial design, with validation, security, and privacy included in the solution rather than added later as controls.
