Douala port completes 40,000-tonne grain silo storage complex
The new silos use a suction unloading system rated up to 600 tonnes per hour to unload grain vessels in under three days, aiming to improve berth turnover at the Port of Douala-Bonabéri.
World Grain reports that the Port Authority of Douala (PAD) and Afisa Food Industry SA have completed a grain storage complex at the Port of Douala-Bonabéri featuring eight silos with a total capacity of 40,000 tonnes.
The project includes a Vigan suction unloading system that can handle up to 600 tonnes per hour, which PAD said enables grain vessels to be unloaded in less than three days to improve berth turnover and port fluidity.
The storage facility is being developed under a public-private partnership and concessioned to Afisa for 20 years before reverting to PAD, according to World Grain.
PAD said the project supports the port’s master plan to expand total capacity to 45 million tonnes by 2050, with an intermediate target of 23 million tonnes by 2030, and that additional storage can strengthen food security through buffer stocks to help regulate prices and ensure cereal availability in national and regional markets.
