Return-to-work programs cut workers' comp costs by about $11,500

Kinetic Insurance found accommodated claims reduced indemnity payments by roughly $5,750 per closed claim, and the analysis covered more than 600 accommodated cases and over 200 unaccommodated ones.

Return-to-work programs in workers' compensation cases can materially lower costs, with Kinetic Insurance reporting that claims where injured employees were returned to modified duty closed with total costs averaging more than $11,500 less than claims without accommodation.

In Kinetic's analysis of more than 600 closed accommodated claims and over 200 closed unaccommodated claims from its own book of business, accommodation also reduced indemnity payments by about $5,750 per closed claim, roughly two-thirds lower.

The report said seven in 10 of the examined claims came from parcel and last-mile delivery accounts, an industry it described as historically facing challenges adopting return-to-work programs.

Kinetic identified barriers to adoption including the lack of lighter job versions in roles involving loading, lifting, and repeated in-and-out climbing from vans, limited dedicated expertise due to the jurisdictional complexity of workers' compensation, and the absence of a structured process that can lead to delays and increase fraud risk.
