Shortwave Coffee enables bitcoin payments in three states after grassroots push

Shortwave Coffee has started accepting bitcoin at the register across multiple locations, with Bitcoin Magazine describing payments going live in three states after a grassroots effort by local bitcoiners.

The outlet links the push to Square’s broader shift, saying that in March 2026 Square began automatically enabling bitcoin acceptance for up to 4 million terminals, moving the feature from opt-in to default enrollment, though some terminals had not yet updated.

In Missouri, Bitcoin Magazine says Shortwave grew from a 2014 family-run roastery into five locations across three states, including two in Columbia, one in St. Louis, plus outposts in Minneapolis and a Tampa roastery.

Bitcoin Magazine adds that local bitcoiners asked baristas and repeatedly contacted the company before receiving confirmation in July 2026, and it points readers to the St. Louis shop at 33 N. Sarah Street in the Central West End.
