Spirit Halloween opened a record number of locations in 2026, topping 1,550 stores nationwide as the company expands its seasonal footprint despite limited retail space.

The leasing environment remains constrained, with retail space vacancy at 4.4% in the second quarter of 2026, about in line with 4.3% in Q2 2025, according to Colliers data cited by Bisnow. With fewer large sites available for short-term leases, Spirit has leaned into a flexible approach to fit a broader range of store sizes.

Spirit prefers floor plates in the 5,000 to 50,000 square foot range and pursues locations within communities of at least 35,000 people within a 3- to 5-mile radius, alongside a car count of at least 25,000 per day. The company’s ideal lease is described as a three-month term running from mid-July through mid-November, with a kick-out clause if a landlord lands a permanent deal by June.

Bisnow reports Spirit starts work on the next Halloween season roughly a year in advance and is constantly identifying potential locations. Colliers retail research managers also said the model reduces risk because Spirit can place pop-up stores quickly and typically has minimal holdover during the season.
