BBC warns of doom spiral as local correspondent roles are cut
The broadcaster said the changes are part of a plan to save £500 million and cut up to 2,000 jobs, with additional TV and radio closures expected to be announced next week.
BBC insiders and staff are warning the BBC could face an “inescapable doom spiral” after it moved to cut local specialist correspondent roles, concerns that the reductions could erode expert local knowledge and weaken support for BBC services, according to the Guardian Business.
The BBC said it will reduce the number of specialist correspondent roles as part of a broader effort to save £500 million and shed up to 2,000 jobs, and staff are now expecting announcements over potential closures of some TV and radio programmes to follow next week.
The article says there is also speculation that BBC Three could be closed again, after it was moved online in 2016 and later returned to television in 2022, while BBC radio output is likely to be affected through cuts to between 350 and 400 hours of audio content by the end of the next financial year.
The Guardian Business adds that the BBC will shift to “two dedicated, multi-platform correspondents in every BBC region,” and notes earlier this year the corporation said it would cut 550 jobs across news, nations and TV and radio content, including the end of Radio 4’s The World Tonight after more than 50 years.
