China and Russia back youth space camp in Malaysia for 2027
The week-long programme in Penang is aimed at children aged seven to 17 and is framed as people-to-people diplomacy.
A planned international youth space camp involving Russian and Chinese partners is being set up in Malaysia, with Penang’s rainforest eco-park slated to host the programme in late 2027 at the earliest, according to SCMP Economy.
The project will run for a week and target young people ages seven to 17, combining physical exercises, immersion in space and natural sciences, and ethics-focused education intended to foster traits such as positive character, the outlet said.
SCMP Economy reports the camp is presented as an initiative in “people’s diplomacy.” Russian astronaut trainer Timofey Egorov described the concept, and the collaboration is said to have been co-developed with China’s Shanghai Science and Technology Museum and Malaysian project initiator Winfred Khoo.
Egorov, who works at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre outside Moscow, discussed Russian youth space-camp traditions held in nature during a conference in Penang earlier this month, SCMP Economy added.
