FBI investigating hackers’ claims of stolen employee health data
The FBI said it is aware of claims of unauthorized activity affecting FBIjobs.gov, and it warned staff to take protective steps while the investigation runs.
The FBI is investigating hackers’ claims that they broke into its systems and stole thousands of current and former employees’ data, the agency said in a statement on Sept. 23, according to Insurance Journal.
A group calling itself ShinyHunters claimed responsibility and said the alleged attack was retaliation for prior FBI statements it described as exaggerated. Bloomberg reported it received samples of purportedly stolen FBI documents from one hacker, including documents that appeared to outline health information for named employees, but Bloomberg said it could not independently verify those claims.
In an emailed statement, the FBI said it is aware of claims involving unauthorized activity affecting FBIjobs.gov, its career website, and that it is investigating. On Sept. 23, FBIjobs.gov returned an error stating the site was temporarily unavailable.
On Wednesday morning, the FBI emailed all personnel that it was looking into the hackers’ allegations, while not confirming a cybersecurity breach, and urged employees to take steps to protect themselves as the probe continues, according to a person familiar with the matter cited by Insurance Journal. The outlet also noted that ShinyHunters has previously been linked to major breaches, including attacks targeting Salesforce, Jaguar Land Rover, and AT&T.
