Hyundai, LIC, and Paytm show uneven returns on IPO debut days
Hyundai Motor India debuted below its IPO price in October 2024, while LIC’s listing in May 2022 fell 7.8% on the first session before later running up sharply.
Ahead of the National Stock Exchange’s planned debut on Thursday, September 24, investors are comparing how past Indian IPOs have performed on their exchange listing days, including Hyundai Motor India, Life Insurance Corporation of India, and Paytm.
Hyundai Motor India’s ₹ 27,858 crore IPO saw a muted debut in October 2024, with the shares starting at ₹ 1,934 versus an IPO price of ₹ 1,960. The stock later turned higher in April 2025, reaching a record high of ₹ 2,890, though the subsequent rally was followed by a correction tied to broader market weakness and higher crude oil prices. Still, at Wednesday’s close of ₹ 2,095, the shares were trading 8.3% above the IPO price.
LIC’s exchange debut in May 2022 was weaker for investors, with shares listing at ₹ 867.20, 8.6% below the IPO price of ₹ 949. In its first trading session, the stock finished at ₹ 875.25, down 7.8% from the IPO price, before later gaining momentum with an uninterrupted uptrend between April 2023 and August 2024 that delivered around 100% growth.
The article also notes Paytm’s inclusion in the comparison, but the provided text cuts off before detailing its debut-day figures or subsequent performance.
