Indian sailor killed in Strait of Hormuz attack on cargo ship

The Antigua and Barbuda-flagged Cape Dao was attacked 2.5 nautical miles off Oman, causing a fire in the engine room.

An attack on a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz killed an Indian sailor, Omani and Indian authorities said, underscoring risks in the key shipping lane used for Gulf oil and gas, according to Agence France-Presse as carried by SCMP Economy.

Oman’s Maritime Security Centre said the Antigua and Barbuda-flagged Cape Dao was attacked 2.5 nautical miles off Oman’s coast, causing a fire in the engine room and leading to the death of one crew member.

SCMP Economy reported that since the Middle East war began, Iran has sought to impose control over the maritime conduit for Gulf oil and gas, at times striking ships it says failed to coordinate with its authorities or deviated from its preferred route.

In response, the United States has been enforcing a counter-blockade of Iranian ports and conducting strikes of its own on ships it says refuse to comply, SCMP Economy said.
