NSE says new SEBI chair unlocked its long-delayed IPO
NSE told LiveMint the regulator cleared the path after a fresh settlement with SEBI, including a ₹1,300 crore agreement in January 2026.
The National Stock Exchange of India said the appointment of a new Securities and Exchange Board of India chairperson marked a turning point for its decade-long path to an IPO, according to LiveMint.
NSE CEO Ashishkumar Chauhan said SEBI opened a constructive dialogue to address regulatory inquiries and help settle pending court cases, which allowed the exchange to provide solutions tied to SEBI’s approval conditions. He also described that SEBI under the new chair raised key issues with NSE ahead of approval.
LiveMint reported that under the prior SEBI chair, clearance was withheld due to unresolved systemic risks and regulatory investigations. The exchange had first filed IPO papers in 2016 after being pulled into a co-location scandal involving allegations that it gave select brokers unfair access to its servers.
After a leadership overhaul, NSE shelved the IPO, then in January 2026 reached a ₹1,300 crore settlement with SEBI and received approval to refile its papers. NSE shares debuted flat in Mumbai on Thursday, with the stock opening at ₹1,800 on BSE and closing at ₹1,817, while Chauhan said listing would not change the exchange’s daily operations or regulatory duties.
