Paraguay urges UN to back Taiwan amid warning over chip supply risks

Paraguay’s president said a Taiwan Strait conflict could disrupt global chip supplies and affect Japan plus East and Southeast Asia.

Paraguay’s President Santiago Pena told the United Nations General Assembly that his country is not neutral on the Taiwan Strait, pledging support for Taiwan and calling for its full and meaningful participation in the UN system, according to SCMP Economy.

Pena warned that tensions in the strait could pose a bigger threat than the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, saying “ominous clouds” are gathering over the Indo-Pacific.

He argued that microchips have become as critical to the 21st century as oil was to the last, and said any conflict would hit Japan and the rest of East and Southeast Asia while also disrupting global chip supplies.

Pena framed the stakes as could scarcely be higher, saying neutrality is not an option for Asuncion and describing the issue as tied to the very future of humanity.
