Port of Vancouver logs record grain exports in first half of year

First-half exports rose 14% year over year to 17.4 million tonnes, led by higher canola seed and specialty crop shipments.

The Port of Vancouver handled a record 17.4 million tonnes of bulk grain exports in the first half of the year, World Grain reports, with volumes up 14% from the same period a year earlier.

The gain was driven by stronger shipments of canola seed, specialty crops and barley as the port moved a bumper crop to global buyers. Canola seed exports increased nearly 19% to 4.85 million tonnes, with growth cited for destinations including China, Europe, Mexico and Pakistan.

Specialty crop volumes including lentils and peas doubled for customers in China and Bangladesh, and India saw nearly triple the volume, according to port officials cited by World Grain.

Bulk wheat exports eased 4% to 8.1 million tonnes, as lower global prices weighed on volumes and farmers rotated acreage toward canola.
