Saudi East-West pipeline restart boosts Middle East oil export options

The East-West pipeline, previously rerouted about 4 million barrels a day toward Yanbu, was shut after Houthi strikes that damaged the system.

Ship-to-ship transfers and, where available, pipelines bypassing the Strait of Hormuz have become the main export routes for much of Middle Eastern oil, according to OilPrice.

The outlet says the region has adapted to changing routes because it is effectively a matter of survival, but that flexibility has come with costs.

OilPrice reports that oil prices fell sharply this week after news that Saudi Arabia restarted its East-West pipeline, which had been damaged by Houthi strikes and was expected to need longer repairs.

The article notes that before the shutdown, the East-West pipeline rerouted about 4 million barrels daily across Saudi Arabia to the Red Sea port of Yanbu, and when it was forced offline earlier this month, Aramco had to send more crude back toward the Persian Gulf.
