US durum prices firm as smaller crop tightens supplies
USDA projects the 2026 durum crop at 66 million bushels, down 23% from 2025, with total 2026-27 supplies also forecast to fall.
Durum prices have been regaining ground relative to hard red spring wheat as the northern Plains harvest winds down, narrowing an unusual discount that persisted through much of the summer, according to World Grain.
The USDA, in its September World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates, estimated the 2026 durum crop at 66 million bushels, down 23% from 86 million in 2025, and projected total 2026-27 durum supplies at 145 million bushels, down 17 million from 162 million in 2025-26.
World Grain reports producer storage and variable crop quality are also complicating access to milling-quality durum, while projected carryover on June 1, 2027, is forecast at 26 million bushels, unchanged from August but down from 33 million this year.
North Dakota Wheat Commission administrator Jim Peterson told World Grain the USDA estimates seem mostly realistic but could be optimistic on supplies, adding that domestic use may exceed USDA projections and that exports could improve if Canada quality issues and higher-protein durum demand in Europe create more opportunities for the US.
