US invites Vladimir Putin to December G20 in Miami at Trump club
The invitation, announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, would mark Putin’s first major in-person G20 appearance since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
The United States has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the G20 summit in Miami in December, a move aimed at providing an opportunity for engagement with world leaders, according to the Guardian Business. The Kremlin has not yet responded publicly to the invitation, which would be the first major G20 summit appearance by Putin since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the invitation during a press conference in New York, after meeting Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Rubio said the US believes it is an opportunity for Putin to engage not only with President Trump but also with other leaders, and he said the administration hopes Putin accepts.
The summit is scheduled to take place at Trump National Doral golf club. The article notes that Russia remains a G20 member, but Putin has not attended a summit of the group since 2019, aside from a virtual session in 2023.
