US rejects push for global AI governance standards at UN
OpenAI, Anthropic, and Hugging Face urged UN-backed coordination on risk evaluation, incident reporting, and human oversight standards, while a US advisor said international governance should not constrain development.
BBC Business reports that leaders from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Hugging Face told the UN that the pace of AI development and the risks it poses require international coordination. Sam Altman called for common risk evaluation standards, and Anthropic's Dario Amodei and Hugging Face's Clement Delangue backed similar proposals.
At the same UN setting, Michael Kratsios, a technology advisor to US President Donald Trump, rejected new global AI regulation. Kratsios said rising speed and real risks were not enough to pause development or constrain it through new international governance structures.
The report says Trump has also opposed an AI slowdown, citing the US competitive advantage and arguing that whoever wins AI will win. Altman, responding to that view in the UN discussions, argued decisions should not be made by AI labs in a single place and called for national and international standards covering AI capability measurement, risk assessment, safeguards, and the level of human oversight.
Altman also pushed for speedy incident reporting, shared protocols to classify problems, and common standards so countries can compare evidence and verify compliance. Anthropic and Hugging Face delivered similar messages during their remarks, the outlet said.
