Bitcoin researchers propose Shielded Bitcoin for private transfers

The Sept. 24 proposal aims to hide amounts, sender and recipient identities, and links between transfers while avoiding a soft fork or consensus changes.

Bitcoin researchers have proposed a system called Shielded Bitcoin that would enable private transfers directly on the Bitcoin network without requiring a soft fork or changes to Bitcoin consensus rules, according to a Sept. 24 paper highlighted by CryptoSlate.

The design, described as a metaprotocol, is intended to conceal transaction amounts, sender and recipient information, and the links between transfers, while publishing the protocol data through the Bitcoin mainnet so participants can reconstruct the private transaction state.

CryptoSlate reports that the proposal adapts Zcash-style techniques, including encrypted notes, public nullifiers, and zero-knowledge proofs, but does not create a separate blockchain, instead using Bitcoin as the publication and ordering layer.

The paper also positions the approach as an extension beyond existing privacy methods such as CoinJoin, PayJoin, and Silent Payments, which can complicate transaction tracing but generally leave transaction amounts and other details visible.
