Block adds Bitcoin Lightning support to x402 for AI agents

Block said Lightning’s low cost and suitability for high-volume transfers make it a fit for agentic commerce using x402.

Block said it has joined the x402 Foundation and added Bitcoin Lightning support to the x402 payment protocol as it expands into payments for AI agents, according to Cointelegraph.

Cointelegraph reports that Block described Lightning as well suited for the low-cost, high-volume payments agentic commerce is expected to rely on.

Block’s head of Bitcoin development initiative Spiral, Steve Lee, said bringing Lightning to x402 is intended to help make Bitcoin practical for everyday use by people and the agents acting on their behalf.

x402 is an open payment standard meant to enable AI agents and web services to complete payments, Cointelegraph added.
