Gold demand from technology stays flat despite AI chip boom

The World Gold Council said gold used in technology was essentially flat at 323 tonnes in 2025, after rising 7% to 326 tonnes in 2024.

The World Gold Council said the AI surge has not translated into higher overall technology-sector demand for gold, as manufacturers efforts to reduce gold use at high prices have offset growth in AI applications. Mining.com reports that gold use in technology remained essentially flat at 323 tonnes in 2025 amid miniaturization and efforts to reduce or eliminate gold from some components. The WGC also noted that technology demand for gold rose 7% in 2024 to 326 tonnes, with AI-related gold use contributing only modestly. In its “AI Boom and Gold” report released Thursday, the World Gold Council described the situation in electronics as a tug-of-war, with AI-driven demand and moves to remove gold appearing evenly matched. The council pointed to the potential for co-packaged optics, or CPO, as a new source of gold demand in the AI sector, even as it said the current demand picture tempers expectations for a near-term boost.

Off the cuff, the WGC also emphasized that it sees longer-term potential from advanced components in which gold remains difficult to replace. It framed the current electronics mix as neither clearly supporting a rapid jump in demand nor fully negating AI-related use.
