Google plans Oct. 1 launch of a satellite prototype for orbital AI data centers

The prototype is expected to reach orbit with solar panels generating about 1 kilowatt of power for basic computing tests, a step toward evaluating larger AI data centers in space.

Google, funded by its satellite project, is planning a launch on Oct. 1 of a prototype spacecraft that will test the concept of solar powered artificial intelligence data centers in space, according to Bisnow.

The satellite is not a full data center, it has the computing power of one server and solar panels expected to generate about 1 kilowatt, enough to run a small household device, Bisnow reported, citing The New York Times.

The test is meant to help Google determine whether, and to what extent, much larger data centers could be placed in orbit, as major tech companies explore space based infrastructure amid growing data center opposition and other hurdles.

Bisnow also noted that putting hardware into orbit would be costly and that space radiation could pose risks, with one expert telling The New York Times that sending one kilogram of material to space costs around $8,000.
